After the call, he'd said he would stay put. And he did, right until he got word of where she was coming in. Then he throw his things back into his bag and made his way to the nearest Couch Canada station. He took the bus and found the cheapest motel he could. He got a room on the backside of the building, and he waited.

He tried to sleep, something he'd been mostly unable to do since he'd called her. But every time he closed his eyes, he imagined he felt the burner phone vibrate and he jerked awake. Finally, he just gave up and turned on the TV. It didn't manage to hold his interest, at all, but it was background noise.

With that noise quieting the doubts in his head, he waited.

He certainly wasn't going to argue that. Being out of touch was just too hard on him. He knew he could not really do it, but he'd faked it for her. Or, at least, he'd tried. Clearly, since she was there, it had been unsuccessful.

He licked his lips, then looked at his plate. "Is there any more?"

"God, yes, absolutely." She practically jumped up to refill his plate. By her nature, Carrie wasn't really that domestic or nurturing on a personal level. She had always channeled that more toward recruiting assets. Being this way with him was odd, but good. "Anything you want."

He almost pressed that, biting his tongue before he asked her to stay and never go back. "Thank you," was his response, instead. It was safer.

It was a good thing he didn't ask, not because she'd have had to say no but because she would have been unable to give a coherent answer at all. She wanted to be there. Or, she wanted to be with him, wherever they could be.

She came back to him with a fresh plate of food, sitting close while he ate so she could pet him. "That beard, though..." She ran her fingers over his jaw between bites. "Maybe if we trim it up some." He needed it to change the shape of his face, but it tickled. "A goatee? Handlebars?"

He reached up and scratched at his beard. "I'll leave that to you, then." He kissed her, then rubbed his cheek against hers. Then he returned his attention to the food.

This plate went down a little slower, but he did finish it and his cup of coffee.

The little cuddle made her crave more. She really wanted to hold him again and get a feeling for how much he'd improved since she got there. Watching him finish more food helped. Once he was done, she took the plate away before crawling back into bed with him.

She snuggled close and put her head on his chest. Holding onto him felt good.

He wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. "Missed you."

She pressed harder against him and nodded slightly. Giving him a detailed listing of all the ways she missed him probably wasn't going to be helpful. "Maggie keeps catching me staring off into space. Can't tell her that I'm thinking of long limbs and a sweet smile."

He laughed softly. "Well, you could..." He looked at her and smiled, just taking in the lines of her face, the way she looked when she was with him.

"Land? Really?"

She blinked a little at the change of direction, then nodded. She had dreams of them living in peace by the side of some lake where no one knew who they were. "Something pretty. Some place with water."

"Up here? In Canada?" He licked his lips. "You don't think I'll ever be able to go back, do you?"

No, she really didn't, but she wasn't prepared to admit that fully to either of them. She sighed softly. "Even if you do, it'll be hard to find the kind of peace we both need there. If we use this place as a retreat rather than home, I still want it to be everything we can dream of."

That would mean at least one extra bedroom for his kids, even though that was probably a pipe dream.

He nodded and settled again. He pressed his lips to her shoulder and sighed softly. "Never pictured myself a Canadian."

Neither one of them ever would have. He was a Marine. She was CIA. Their whole lives were supposed to be directed at serving...not Canada. But they'd given so much and there was no way for them to really retire at home. Not now. That they'd ever entertained the idea that they could was now just a painful memory.

She rubbed her forehead against his. "Citizen of the world?"

"Something like that." He chuckled softly, then shifted so he could kiss her. All his previous kisses had been tentative, as though he expected her to disappear. This kiss was different. He knew she was real, that she was there with him.

She had groaned thickly and pressed against him before it really sank in what he'd done. Then she shifted closer and pressed even harder. She'd dreamed about this kiss. When she pulled back, she whimpered weakly. "Well, okay then."

His hand moved over her side, settling finally on her hip. He held her as he smiled against her lips. "Missed you."

Her hands didn't settle. Instead she caressed his chest and shoulders, reminding herself how he felt. Her memory was good, startling clear in some areas, but she still wanted that tactile reminder. She nodded, meeting his smile with a grin of her own. "Missed you so much. Always thinking of you."

He swallowed and nodded. "Always thinking about you, too." He shifted and kissed her again, more needy this time. They had done plenty to reconnect. But there was still one more thing.

She was more than ready to give him what he needed. That contact was crucial to both of them, but she didn't want it to be a panicked kind of thing. They needed it to be reassuring. She never stopped touching him as they kissed, never stopped petting.

He slowly shifted them as they kissed, getting both of them on their sides. Then he started pulling at her clothes. There was nothing panicked about the contact. It was pure need.

Need was good. It was perfectly reasonable. She let him get her shirt loose and half open before she started working on his clothes. She wanted him totally bare and she wanted to keep him that way for a good long while. As much as she needed that contact, she needed that to be normal for them.

When she got his pants part way down, she reached her hand in and goosed him.

He yelped softly when she goosed him. "Hey." Then he ground against her, letting himself get lost for a few moments.

The yelp made her laugh happily, but it was the way he rubbed against her that made her happiest. At their best, they could take each other to the safest, most honest place in the world. Her eyes fluttered shut as she enjoyed his body against hers.

It was a while before she went back to moving her hands over him, now with no danger of pinching.

He just enjoyed the contact. There was no reason to rush her, no reason to push. Not when he'd been alone for so long. Now he needed all the memories he could get, to carry him through his next period of isolation.

His lips brushed over hers at every opportunity, but never lingers. He wanted to enjoy all over her, to memorize all of her, to hold him over.
